Title: Nobody’s Keeping Time (Balafon, N’goni, and the Quartet from Ghent)

I came across a record this week that made me nod at my screen.

It’s L’Ombre du Croco by Bamako Express, a quartet from Ghent. The review I read described it as the most percussion-driven release in a pile of otherwise gentle, ambient-leaning albums. The instruments are balafon, n’goni, and djembe, with Flemish-style strings woven through. The songs are sung in Bambara.

The balafon is the one that caught me. It’s a wooden mallet instrument, so it’s pitched percussion, and it can carry a melody. That’s the heart of what I’m trying to do with percussion ambient. Most ambient music either leaves out percussion or uses it as a quiet pulse under a pad. I want the bells, mallets, gongs, and chimes to be the melodic and harmonic story, with the drone as scaffolding and the unpitched percussion as connective tissue. Nobody in the mix is “the beat.” Everybody is either telling the story or supporting it.

Bamako Express isn’t ambient, and I’m not claiming they’re doing what I do. But a record where the rhythm instruments are also the voices reminds me this idea is very old. People have been making melody with wood, metal, and skin for a very long time. I’m just pointing it toward quieter, wider landscapes.

When I build a track in Ableton Live 12, I keep asking myself whether a part is telling the story or supporting it. Once a drum stops being “the beat,” it has to be one or the other. A mallet part that carries the melody and a drum that lets it breathe sound very different from a kit holding down a groove. This week’s record was a good reminder of that.

I’ll write more once I’ve spent real time with it. If you want to hear where I’m taking the same instincts, my music is on Spotify under vgmrmojo.

Ancient rhythms. Future landscapes. One continuous journey.
